ESR-01Hey Rhyoung LyooHey Rhyoung from South Korea received her Bachelor's degree in Biology from the Kyung Hee University in Seoul (Republic of Korea) in 2010 and her Master's degree from the the same university in 2012. Until 2015, she has been a researcher at the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency. She has a strong interest in virus-host interactions, viral pathogenesis and molecular virology. In October 2015 she will start her ANTIVIRALS project at Utrecht University (The Netherlands) entitled "Developing host-targeted, broad-spectrum inhibitors of enterovirus replication".
ESR-02Lisa BauerLisa from Austria received her Bachelor's degree in Biology from the University of Vienna in 2013. She continued her studies at the University of Vienna (Austria) and was awarded her Master's degree in Molecular Microbiology and Immunobiology in 2015, for which she performed an internship at the Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. She will start her ANTIVIRALS project at Utrecht University (The Netherlands) in the group of prof. Frank van Kuppeveld with the title "Identifying FDA-approved drugs as novel inhibitors of virus replication".
ESR-03Kristina KovacikovaKristina from Slovakia obtained her Honour's degree in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Edinburgh (United Kingdom) in 2015, during which she performed her Honour's research project in the Roslin Institute of the University of Edinburgh. She has also been employed as a research assistant at the Agency for Science, Technology and Research of the Singapore Immunology Network (Singapore) and as a summer research student at the Comenius University of Bratislava. She will be employed at Leiden University Medical Center (The Netherlands) to perform her ANTIVIRALS project entitled "Development and mode of action of chikungunya virus inhibitors".
ESR-04Natacha OgandoNatacha from Portugal received her Bachelor's degree in Bioscience-Microbiology from the Catholic University of Portugal in 2008, followed by a Master's degree in Microbiology and Health from the same university in 2012. Part of her research for her Master's degree, she performed at the University of Santiago de Compostella (Spain) as part of an Erasmus programme. After her Master's, she has worked as a researcher at Genentech, Inc (USA) and at Medimmune AZ (UK). She will pursue a PhD degree through the ANTIVIRALS project at Leiden University Medical Center (The Netherlands) entitled "The quest for broad-spectrum coronavirus inhibitors".
ESR-05Melissa NavarroMelissa from Mexico has a Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the Autonomous University of Morelos, Cuernavaca, Mexico. After working as a research assistant at the Physics Science Institute of Autonomous University of Mexico and the National Public Health Institute of Mexico, she pursued her Master's degree in Cell and Molecular Biology at Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden. She will move to Heidelberg (Germany) to start her ANTIVIRALS PhD research project entitled: "Molecular mechanism of highly potent NS5A inhibitors of hepatitis C virus".
ESR-06Anna PłaszczycaAnna from Poland was awarded her Bachelor's degree in Biotechnology from the Jagiellonian University in Kraków (Poland) in 2012. As part of her Master's programme at the same university, she performed an Erasmus exchange study in Biomedicine at Lund University in Sweden. She received her Master's degree in 2014. Anna has enrolled in a PhD programme at the University Hospital of Heidelberg (Germany) and performs the ANTIVIRALS project with the title "Targeting the biogenesis of dengue virus replication factory for antiviral therapy".
ESR-07Roberto ManganaroRoberto from Italy earned his Master's degree in Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technology from University of Rome "La Sapienza", Italy. During his Master's , he did an internship at the "Colosseum Combinatorial Chemistry Centre for Technology" (C4T), Rome, Italy. After this, he worked as a junior medicinal chemist at IRBM Science Park, Pomezia, Italy. He will start as a PhD student at Cardiff University (United Kingdom) with the research project "Identification of novel anti-RSV inhibitors by a computer-based drug design approach".
ESR-08Birgit ZonsicsBirgit from Austria obtained her "Magistra der Phamazie" from University of Vienna (Austria). For this degree, she performed an internship in collaboration with Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich (Switzerland). She obtained her license as a pharmacist and has worked in the pharmacy for several years in total. She will now engage in a PhD research project at Cardiff University (United Kingdom) about "Computer-aided design, synthesis and evaluation of novel anti-CHKV compounds".
ESR-09Ana Sofia RamosAna Sofia from Portugal received her Bachelor's degree in Biology from the University of Aveiro (Portugal) in 2010, and continued her Master's degree in Biochemistry at the University of Porto (Portugal) to finish in 2013. She has worked as research assistant and ITQB fellow at the Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa (Portugal). She will start her ANTIVIRALS research project at AFMB of Aix Marseille University (France) with the title "Inhibitors of the mRNA capping machinery of Alphaviruses".
ESR-10Le Thi Tuyet NhungNhung Le from Vietnam received her Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences from the VNU University of Science in Hanoi (Vietnam) in 2011, for which she performed internships at Hanoi (Vietnam) and Pohang (South Korea). She moved to Italy to obtain her Master's degree in Molecular Biology and Genetics at the University of Pavia in 2015. During her Master's studies, she performed research internships at the Institute of Molecular Genetics in Pavia (Italy) and at the Aix Marseille University (France). In September 2015 , she has started her ANTIVIRALS project at Aix Marseille University entitled "Viral enzymes in the Coronavirus RNA replication complex: assembly, mechanism and inhibition".
ESR-11Kristina LankoKristina from Russia performed two university studies: she obtained her diploma cum laude in Classical Philology from the Saint-Petersburg State University (Russia) in 2009 and her diploma in Molecular Biotechnology from the Saint-Petersburgh State Technological Institute (Russia) in 2015. She has started her ANTIVIRALS project at the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium) in the group of prof. Johan Neyts with the title "Characterisation of novel enterovirus inhibitors".
ESR-12Marion FranciscoMarion from France concluded her core studies diploma in Biophysics at the Ecole Technique Supérieure du Laboratoire in Paris (France) with high distinction in 2011. After this she did a three-year post-secondary diploma in Biotechnology and Economy at the Université Diderot in Paris. In July 2015, she received her Master's degree in Biotechnology Engineering from the Université de Technologie de Compiègne (France). During her Master's, she did an exchange semester with the University of Texas at Brownsville (USA). She will soon start her ANTIVIRALS project at Aratana Therapeutics (Leuven, Belgium) with the title "Antiviral mechanisms of foot-and-mouth disease virus inhibitors".
ESR-13Angelica CorcueraAngelica from the Philippines started her education in the Philippines and received her Bachelors degree in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology from the National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, University of the Philippines, Diliman (Philippines), where she continued to work as a university research associate for two years. She then moved to Oxford (United Kingdom) to pursue a Master's degree in Integrated Immunology at the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences, University of Oxford (United Kingdom). She will now make the transition to a research career in industry with her research project at AiCuris, Wuppertal (Germany) that has the title: "Identification and characterisation of hepatitis B virus inhibitors".
ESR-14Haridian Montañez BrullHari Montañez Brull received her Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences from the Universidad de Laguna (Tenerife, Spain) and continued her Master’s degree in Barcelona (Spain) in AIDS pathogenesis and treatment. During her undergraduate studies, she performed a number of training periods elsewhere, for example in Madrid, at Harvard Medical School (Boston, USA) and at Masaryk University in Czeck Republic. She has spent some time at Complix Luxembourg, and is now working on her research project at the Catholic Universtiy of Leuven (Belgium) entitled "Identification and development of potent and safe inhibitors of ZIKV replication”.
ESR-15Clara Van HoeyClara Van Hoey from France holds Master degree in Medicinal Chemistry and a Pharmacy degree from the University of Strasbourg (France). To obtain these degrees, she performed several internships at biotech companies in the area of Strasbourg and at the Novartis Institute for Biomedical Research, Basel (Switzerland). She will engage in the joint project of the University of Vienna (Austria) and Prestwick Chemicals (France) under the supervision of prof. Thierry Langer with the title: "Development of a non-nucleoside inhibitor of enterovirus polymerases: Computer-aided design, synthesis and biological evaluation".
